Queen Palm Care
The Queen palm tree prefers full sun, but can tolerate some shade. The Syagrus Romanzoffiana is moderate drought tolerant. It can withstand some droughts, but likes to be watered. In summer time it requires abundant water. Soil should be moist, but not soggy. New planted trees requires daily watering for the first several weeks for fastest growth, then decrease gradually.
The Queen palm tree grows best in acidic sandy well-drained soils, but can tolerate all kinds of soils.
The Queen palm is hardy to 20 F. Temperatures below 18 F can kill the tree. USDA Hardiness Zone: 9 to 11.
The tree is moderate salt tolerant and can grow near the ocean.
It is sensitive to high winds and hurricanes. The leaves break and topple over in high wind. It has a weak shallow root system and prone to blow over.
This tree often suffers from micronutrient deficiencies such as magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, potassium and zinc. It is necessary to fertilize your palm at least twice a year in spring and summer with applications of the most essential micronutrients. Follow all manufacturers’ instructions how to apply fertilizers.
Dead leaves remain on the trunk for several months before the tree shed them. For best look pruning and trimming is very important. Fall is the best time for removing dead fronds.
