Queen Palm Physical Appearance
The Queen palm (Syagrus Romanzoffiana) is a very elegant and graceful tree. It is very similar to the Coconut palm in physical appearance. The palm is medium-sized and grows up to 50 feet in height. It is a fast growing tree, grows about 1-3 feet per year.
The Queen palm has a slender trunk and an elegant crown of curving, lacy, glossy bright green or dark green, about 10-15 feet long, pinnate fronds. The trunk is gray, partially self-shedding and covered with distinctive sheath scars at the top.
The Queen palm canopy consists of about 15 leaves. They have spread about 25 feet in width. There are about 200 linear, drooping leaflets per leaf. In poor soils and without micronutrients leaves yellow easily. Dead leaves remain on the trunk for several months and look untidy. They are often required trimming and pruning.
The creamy yellow flowers come in beautiful, conspicuous, hanging multi branched clusters. Inflorescences emerge in large very attractive pods from the leaf crown.
The Queen palm tree produces numerous decorative bright orange dates. They are green when unripe, round, 1 inch in diameter, come in long (up to 6 feet) hanging clusters. Each drupe has one seed with three spots. The fruits ripen in late fall or early winter. They fall down to the ground creating a mess.
